New in 2023, the WHA Quality and Patient Safety Awards program recognizes hospitals that advance and improve patient outcomes in Wisconsin.

Honors:
  • Excellence in Health Care Quality and Patient Safety Award: Recognizing hospitals taking innovative steps to improve quality, patient safety and patient outcomes.  
  • Hospital Mentorship and Quality Champion Award: Recognizing hospitals for demonstrating mentoring relationships and engagement through active participation, collaboration and the sharing of tools and resources with other hospitals. 
Eligibility:
Hospital must be a Wisconsin Hospital Association member. Only one application may be submitted per award program each year. Hospitals are eligible to apply for both awards and can be awarded both. Previous award winners and applicants may apply each year.

Excellence in Health Care Quality and Patient Safety Award


Recognizing hospitals taking innovative steps to improve quality, patient safety and patient outcomes.  

Awards will be given to three hospitals based on bed size: one award to a hospital with 1 to 25 beds; one award to a hospital with 26 to 99 beds; and one award to a hospital with 100+ beds.

Criteria
The hospital should demonstrate one or more of the following innovative steps towards improving patient care and outcomes:
  • Implementation of innovative patient safety and/or quality process, project or program, with measurably improved outcomes
  • Hardwiring of a quality process, project or program, resulting in consistent high reliability in reduction of patient harm
  • Demonstration of improved patient safety/high reliability
  • Utilization of data to drive decisions/change
  • Demonstration of front-line staff ingenuity
  • Top performer or measurable improvement in CheckPoint quality measures, as applicable, related to project submission.
Evaluation Criteria
Submissions will be scored and assigned points (0-6) on each of the following:
  • Significance
  • Data-driven approach
  • Culture of safety
  • Innovation and engagement
  • Results
Topic Examples
  • Patient and family engagement
  • Health equity and social determinants of health
  • Access to care
  • Behavioral health
  • Maternal child health
  • Transitions of are across the continuum
  • Engagement of partners and community in care
  • Supporting health care worker resiliency

Hospital Mentorship and Quality Champion Award


Recognizing hospitals for demonstrating mentoring relationships and engagement through active participation, collaboration and the sharing of tools and resources with other hospitals. 

One hospital will receive this award.

Criteria
Hospitals should demonstrate one or more of the following:
  • Active participation in WHA patient quality and safety initiatives
  • Collaboration with WHA members
  • Willingness to serve as a mentor through education and sharing of tools, processes, programs and presentations
  • Top performer or measurable improvement in CheckPoint quality measures, as applicable, related to project submission.
Evaluation Criteria
Nominees will be scored and assigned points (0-6) on each of the following:
  • Participation in WHA quality Initiatives and patient safety initiatives
  • Performance on measures
  • Demonstration of mentorship
  • Collaboration and the sharing of tools and resources
All hospitals will be considered. However, all hospitals are encouraged to apply for their hospital demonstrating how they have acted as a mentor OR a nomination for another hospital they have received mentorship from.

Examples
  • Active participation/engagement on WHA-based quality and patient safety initiatives (i.e., webinars, learning action networks, presentations, quality showcase, etc.)
  • Willingness to educate/reinforce messages regarding patient safety with employees, patients, family and community members as needed
  • Serves as a role model and example for others to follow.
