Community Benefits Reporting

Getting Started

Every day, hospitals are helping people. But, often, those stories are not the ones that are retold in our communities. This year, Wisconsin hospitals will join together to collect, publish and report community benefits to build awareness of these activities.

Establish a Contact Person
Hospitals help their communities in many ways. The first step to publicizing the benefit a hospital brings to their community is establishing a point of contact in the hospital where all community benefits are reported internally. This contact person might be in the community or public relations department, or in administration. The goal is to make sure that someone in the hospital knows about every activity that can be counted as a community benefit.

Be familiar with the WHA community benefit survey tool.
The WHA community benefit survey tool is your guide for determining "what counts and how to count it." A review of the survey will give you a good idea of what you should collect and report throughout the year.

Meet with the Finance Department to determine dollar value
There are many ways to track hours and account for time. A meeting in advance of filling out the survey with the finance department will be necessary to determine how to account for supplies used for community benefit activities, and a labor rate.

Filling out the survey: The WHA Help Line
This year is the first year that WHA has collected community benefits. We realize that you may not be able to track all activities from the past 12 months. Do the best that you can with the information you can find. If you have questions about the survey, call WHA at 608-274-1820 and ask for Mandy Ayers, or email mayers@wha.org. Mary Kay Grasmick or Brian Potter are also available to help. Brian's expertise is in accounting, and Mary Kay can help with the survey and stories.
