High Stakes Communication: Health Literacy

Program Description
Communication has been identified as a primary issue in Root Cause Analysis during Sentinel Event investigation. Communication is a critical aspect of ensuring the health and safety of patients. This audioconference will focus on discussion of the widespread issue of health literacy and various strategies for improving health literacy among patients.

Learning Objectives
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
  1. Implement at least two strategies improving health literacy with patients.
  2. Describe methods to improve health literacy to reduce errors.

Sandra Cornett, Director, Ohio State University AHEC Health Literacy Initiative
Sandra Cornett is the director of the Ohio State University (OSU) AHEC Health Literacy Initiative. She obtained her BS in nursing, a MS in nursing education and nursing administration, and a PhD in adult education and instructional design from OSU. For 21 years, Cornett served as program manager of consumer health education at OSU, and in 1996, she established a Center for Health Information within hospitals where a large quantity of materials are available to patients, families, staff and the general public. In addition, Cornett is a part-time assistant professor at the Otterbein College, in the Department of Nursing, and an adjunct assistant professor at OSU, in the School of Allied Medical Professions.

How the Audioconference Will Work
Dial-in instructions, on-line login instructions and any other reference materials will be emailed to each registrant approximately three days prior to the conference. If you do not receive them by this date, please email lgeishirt@wha.org.

It is the responsibility of the registrant to access presentation materials prior to the day of the event. If your e-mail address changes, you do not receive an e-mail with instructions from WHA, or if you are unable to open presentation materials, please contact Lisa Geishirt at WHA two days prior to the event to allow time to address the issue.

Substitution, Transfer and Cancellation Policy
Cancellations received in writing up to five business days prior to an event will be given a full refund less a $50 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations received less than five business days prior and day-of-program no-shows. Substitutions are accepted.
