The Financial Implications of MS-DRGs

Program Description
This session will address issue including why CMS implemented MS-DRGs, some operational steps to reduce the financial impact, alternative methods of assessing the MS-DRG financial impact, how managed care contracts that use DRGs can be adjusted and how to anticipate the financial implications of the present-on-admission indicator.

- Explain the implementation of MS-DRGs and associated peripheral changes.
- Discuss alternative ways to project the potential financial impact of MS-DRGs.
- Describe the operational impacts in addition to payment impacts.
- Assess the need to change managed care contracts using DRG type payment processes.
- Explain the shift from charge-based MS-DRG calibration to cost-based MS-DRG weights.
- Review overall chargemaster pricing structures and the impact on cost reporting processes.
- Explain the RTI International reports relative to charge compression.

Duane Abbey is a management consultant and president of Abbey & Abbey Consultants. For over 20 years, he has provided health care consulting services to hospitals, physicians, and medical clinics. The focus of his consulting has been in the areas of compliance, payment, and delivery systems. In addition to his consulting, Abbey is an invited presenter for hospital associations, medical societies, and other groups. He also has published both articles and books on healthcare topics. Abbey earned his graduate degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Iowa State University.

How the Webinar Will Work

Substitution, Transfer and Cancellation Policy
Cancellations received in writing up to five business days prior to an event will be given a full refund less a $50 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations received less than five business days prior and day-of-program no-shows. Substitutions are accepted.
