Resource Spotlight: Payer Detail Dashboard

The WHA Information Center (WHAIC) has been collecting data, including payer data, for the past 20 years in accordance with state statute 153. The Payer Detail Dashboard allows users to compare hospitals by services and payers to understand the market. Beginning with 2022 first quarter data, the WHAIC Payer Detail Dashboard visualizes volume and charges by individual commercial payer, as well as both Medicare and Medicaid. The data further breaks down to show more detail by facility, service line and primary diagnosis or principal procedure. Organizations can begin to analyze questions such as:

  • Why are patients in selected zip codes with selected payer(s) going to peer hospitals?
  • What are peer hospitals providing that my organization does not offer, or have limited capacity to provide?
  • Is there a new technology that my organization could be leveraging?
  • Are amenities at competitor hospitals creating a competitive differentiation?
  • Do the lost volumes substantiate recruiting additional providers?
  • Could there be a possibility to partner with other health care organizations to enhance care delivery to the communities?
This dashboard is exclusively accessible to data users who purchase at the WHAIC relational data set level. This dataset includes access to inpatient, outpatient surgery, observation and emergency department data. (Please note that Other Hospital Outpatient (OHO) data is also available to purchase as an add on.) If your organization is not currently at the relational data set level and you are interested in upgrading, contact WHAIC Operations Director Brian Competente for details.
