Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Deputy Director Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards Elizabeth Pusch joined the Sept. 27, 2024 meeting of the WHA Council on Workforce Development. Pusch briefed the group on the rapid growth of health care apprenticeship and youth apprenticeship, noting, “These are employer programs where you provide the employment and experience and select your education partners to supply the schooling.”
Pusch encouraged Wisconsin hospitals and health systems to consider utilizing
Fast Forward Industry Sector Worker Training Grants to help their employees qualify for higher-level employment or increased wages through occupational training, including through apprenticeships. Applications are currently open, with a deadline of 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, 2024. Find application information and links

Emplify Bellin Region Health Talent Acquisition Manager Samantha Van Asten, and Bellin College Director of Outreach and Engagement Chad Dall joined Pusch for the discussion of health care apprenticeship. They shared information about Bellin’s Healthcare Academy and how their focused efforts have onboarded more than 100 youth apprentice employees and bridged workforce gaps for nursing assistant, patient admissions, sterile processing and other in-demand roles since 2022.
The September council meeting also included a discussion of the
2024 Wisconsin Health Care Workforce Salary Survey, which provided the 118 participating WHA and Wisconsin Health Care Human Resources (WisHHRA) member facilities with individual wage-level data on compensation for common clinical and non-clinical jobs, and on turnover in key segments of the health care workforce. The council then had an opportunity to hear about planning underway for the 2025 survey, including the addition of health care workplace violence questions and a benefits survey. WHA and WisHHRA will launch the 2025 version of the survey in January 2025.
