Humbitious – The Power of Low-Ego & High-Drive Leadership

Dr. Amer Kaissi

In leadership, humility is not a weakness it is actually a strength, and it can be a superpower when combined with ambition. Building on his experience as an executive coach, research from organizational and sport teams, and stories of successful (and not-so-successful) leaders in business & government, Amer shows why self-aware, appreciative, open-minded and ambitious leaders can lead their teams and organizations to high performance, and why self-centered ones can only have short-term success. He provides specific take-home behaviors for leaders to implement immediately and transform the way they lead.

1A – Overcoming Behavioral Health Challenges in Rural Hospital Markets

Stephanie Weatherly, DNP, PMH RN-BC, FACH, Chief Clinical Officer
Psychiatric Medical Care

Rural health systems across America struggle to meet the growing demands for behavioral healthcare in their communities leading to delays in patient care, overutilization of emergency departments, overstressed staff, and reimbursement challenges. This presentation explores successful programs that have overcome barriers to behavioral healthcare, both clinically and financially, in rural markets. These barriers include a lack of mental health providers and stigma surrounding mental health. Case studies will be shared from four different care models used in rural health systems: Inpatient psychiatry, Intensive outpatient psychiatry, Rural health clinics, and ED management. These case studies examine the sustained change that occurs with behavioral health programming such as reduction in ED throughput, reduced recidivism, reduced psychosomatic PCP visits, polypharmacy reduction, positive community support for the program, and positive financial outcomes. Participants will develop an understanding of the case studies and come away with actionable steps to improve behavioral healthcare access in their communities. They’ll be able to evaluate presented solutions to determine which would be the most beneficial in their healthcare market.

1B - CommYOUnity: Healthy Buildings + Healthy People

Jen Voigt, Senior Design Architect and Dave Hubka, Practice Leader – Sustainability
EUA

We’ve all heard of sick building syndrome, but this session will focus on the flip side: Exciting ways our buildings can actually make our people and communities healthier. WELL is an approach that applies the science of physical and social environments to benefit people's health, well-being and productivity. It’s uniquely positioned at the convergence of sustainability, organizational culture and community impact. We’ll talk through the attributes that make up WELL buildings and how our hospitals and clinics can have a healthier and more engaged workforce by focusing on even a few of these components. Equally applicable to new and existing buildings, there are scalable strategies for rural healthcare campuses to support inclusive, integrated, resilient communities.

1C - Setting Up Your Emergency Department Processes To Successfully Navigate EMTALA  (Board of Trustee Track)

Sarah E. Coyne, Partner and Jon R. Kammerzelt, Partner
Quarles & Brady LLP

For rural hospitals with limited resources and the current state of decreased options for transfer, EMTALA becomes a minefield.  This presentation identifies the hard questions and provides practical solutions.  What do you do with a patient needing a higher level of care but nobody to accept that patient?  When do you need to report to CMS?  What do you do with physicians who are untimely or absent while on call? When and where do the EMTALA obligations trigger and which aspects of your campus are affected?  We will provide these answers and more, including helpful and user friendly documents.

2A – Program Evaluation of MOVIN® in a Rural Hospital Setting

Mary Lane-Peot, RN, BSN, DNP Student
Kelly Sutherland, BSN, RN, Acute Care Coordinator

Tomah Health

The importance of mobility has been witnessed and documented for centuries yet mobility orders are the most frequently omitted during an inpatient hospital stay. Further, older adults are at a particularly high risk for functional decline and falls following a hospital discharge. This session will explore one rural hospital’s remedy for this concern by going back to the basics of mobility through the introduction of an inpatient mobility program entitled MOVIN®. Topics of discussion will include the methodology and results of an outcomes-based program evaluation during MOVIN®’s implementation focused on readiness for hospital discharge and recommendations for future mobility program implementation.

3B - Using AI Smart Search and Summarization to Reduce Clinician’s Cognitive Load

Randy Brandt, PA-C, Primary Care Physician Assistant, Mile Bluff Medical Center (Mauston, WI)
Christine Silva, MEDITECH

Clinicians today are overwhelmed with the volume and variety of patient data they’re expected to consume before making medical decisions.  As a result, they must either spend exorbitant amounts of time reviewing data from a variety of sources and in different formats, or disregard it altogether and potentially overlook vital information. Mile Bluff Medical Center has partnered with Google Health and its EHR vendor MEDITECH to launch powerful search and summarization functionality that leverages Google’s AI, Natural Language Model, and intelligent search capabilities to surface data from their EHR, legacy platform, and additional sources, including unstructured data, scanned documents and even handwritten notes. It then sorts, summarizes, and ranks results by relevance for quick review, allowing clinicians to see all available information for a patient related to any topic, term, or medical concept from one place — inside the EHR within existing workflows — creating a longitudinal view of a patient's health history that reduces cognitive load on frontline providers.

The Rise of Smart Threats: How AI is Changing Ransomware and Social Engineering

Kevin Bong, Director of Cybersecurity Consulting and Brad Lutgen, Cybersecurity Leader & Partner, Ghostscale

When it comes to cybersecurity, there are tried and true ways for hospitals to detect suspicious activity. However, those key indicators are becoming more and more difficult to identify with the acceleration of artificial intelligence (AI). M3 Insurance, and their partners at Ghostscale, team up to showcase a real-time example of how simple it has become for bad actors to create social engineering and ransomware schemes, and to share tips and best practices that hospitals should consider adopting in this new cyber landscape. M3 has unique experience serving hospitals with their cyber liability needs. We currently work on the cyber liability lines of insurance for four WHA members (Western WI Health, Mile Bluff, Richland Hospital, and Stoughton Health), as well as the WHA itself.
