Creating a Community: Ascension All Saints Stroke Support Group

Social engagement and connectedness are essential for stroke recovery, as many survivors face functional and emotional changes, including post-stroke depression, which affects one-third of stroke survivors and is linked to poorer outcomes and high mortality rates. Recognizing the benefits a stroke support group has on an individual recovering from a stroke, families and caregivers, Ascension All Saints' Stroke Coordinator, Hollie Landreman, collaborated with acute and subacute care colleagues to establish a stroke support group in 2019. The group held its first meeting in August 2021 and has since fostered a supportive community where stroke survivors and their caregivers can access resources, education, and share experiences in a safe environment.
