Health Equity Project (CAP Services)

Marshfield Clinic Health System-River Region funded community events that provided health services to marginalized residents of Portage County. The first of two events occurred in April 2024 and offered comprehensive health screenings, vaccines and health information to attendees. CAP Services, a local nonprofit agency working to advance social and economic justice, carefully planned the event to be accessible, trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, informative and fun.

The event was held at a location easily accessible by bus, and gas cards were distributed to help with transportation costs. Bilingual and bicultural staff were present to provide essential language support and assist attendees with navigating the resource fair.

The free health screening included blood pressure check, blood sugar, anemia, cholesterol, and physical therapy. Attendees received health insurance information and referrals. Additional resources were available for mental health, addiction recovery, smoking cessation, diabetes management, local food programs, transportation options, housing, and family crisis. On-site appointments were available with CAP Service’s Mental Health Navigation program, offering immediate support.

Marshfield Clinic Health System AmeriCorps Recovery Corps member Kayle Glamann was on site providing resources. “It seems that most of the people were there for the clinic. I thought that was absolutely needed and very utilized.”

During the event, all 31 attendees received comprehensive health screenings. An additional 13 attendees received COVID vaccines or boosters. 83% of participants responded, “strongly agree” to the question “The program helped me meet my needs/ achieve my goals.”

Organizers are eager to increase attendance at the next event planned for this fall. With additional outreach through diverse channels and collaboration with local agencies, they expect an even greater impact from future events.
