Partnering for School Success

A healthy home and family life can nurture academic excellence. To promote healthy homes, minds and families, Aurora Medical Center – Manitowoc County has partnered with Kiel Area School District and Valders Area School District to offer the Student and Family Assistance Program (SFAP).

Throughout a student’s academic career, they may experience a variety of stressful situations or traumas that impact their ability to be present and successful in their education.  SFAP increases access to care for student and family well-being with support resources for students and their families, including:

  • Virtual or in-person confidential counseling for students and their loved ones.
  • Behavioral education on topics such as anger management and marijuana use.
  • Life-balance services for families, such as financial counseling, legal consultation or assistance finding childcare.

In 2023, 83 sessions were completed with families in the Kiel Area School District and 36 were completed with families in the Valders Area School District. Examples of issues addressed include grief, anxiety, alcohol and other drug use, relationship issues, and academic stress.

By bringing resources to children and families through the school district, Aurora Medical Center – Manitowoc County is helping schools lessen the impact of negative experiences and improve students’ health and well-being.
