Removing Barriers Through Multiple Programs
Aurora Health Care is committed to enhancing access to free and discounted care across the state to improve overall health and wellness. In addition to providing low-income patients with free personalized financial assessments, and helping them understand their options, the organization offers a range of programs and services – from support for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence to a Milwaukee-based mobile team that provides free health screenings, immunizations and more.
Meanwhile, Aurora Walker’s Point Community Clinic, operated by Aurora Health Care, is the largest free clinic in the state. Primarily serving low-income patients who are unable to get health insurance, providers at the clinic understand and compassionately address the unique needs of immigrants, refugees and homeless patients.
Addressing Health Equity to Improve Birth Outcomes
Aurora Health Care is dedicated to addressing the alarming rates of maternal and infant mortality among Black and Hispanic mothers and babies in Wisconsin. Recognizing the need for targeted interventions, the focus is on reducing disparities in key areas: lowering c-section rates, addressing pregnancy-related blood pressure disorders, and improving the timely identification and response to severe maternal hemorrhage.
Understanding that maternal and infant care extends beyond hospital walls, Aurora hospitals have partnered with Feeding America to launch the Nurturing Collaborative: Integrating Nutrition and Wellness for Healthy Birth Outcomes. This initiative provides monthly boxes of healthy food and infant formula to pregnant parents, newborns, and children up to one year old in Milwaukee, ensuring that families have the nutrition they need for healthy pregnancies and early childhood development.
In addition, Aurora Family Services offers vital support through Safe Mom Safe Baby and Safe Home Environment programs. These programs provide resources and assistance to mothers who are victims of domestic violence, helping them secure safe home environments where they and their babies can live and thrive.
By addressing both the medical and social drivers of health, Aurora Health Care is committed to improving outcomes for its most vulnerable populations, ensuring that all mothers and babies in here have the opportunity for healthy lives.
Partnering to Prepare Our Future Health Care Professionals
Aurora Health Care hospitals are focused on creating new jobs in the communities they serve, while also enabling career advancement for teammates and training the next generation of providers. There are several initiatives aimed at cultivating and sustaining a dynamic workforce:
A group of six students who worked at Aurora BayCare Medical Center graduated in May from Project SEARCH, a business-led collaboration that enables young adults with disabilities to gain and maintain employment through training and career exploration.
Through a community scholarship program, about $100,000 was awarded to 20 college students in IL and WI in health care-related fields – including women, racial minorities and others who are historically underrepresented in STEM.
In partnership with Herzing University, the Sterile Processing to Surgical Technologist pathway program allows teammates to complete an Associate of Applied Science degree in up to seven semesters. The program, which is partly conducted in hospital operating rooms, addresses the surgical technologist talent shortage and creates a pipeline for teammates to advance their careers.
The Culinary Arts Line Cook Apprenticeship incorporates on-the-job learning with paid instruction through college partners to address the gap in skilled culinary arts talent, while also meeting an organization need. The program is fueled by a partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards and Milwaukee Area Technical College.
