ProHealth's Hispanic Health Resource Center Staff Make Breast Health Education Fun

ProHealth Care's Hispanic Health Resource Center assists Spanish-speaking community members who need breast and cervical cancer screenings, cancer education and related resources. Breast cancer and prevention are serious subjects, so the center’s health promoters make educational sessions as active and social as possible.

Activities have included:

  • A craft-making educational program about stress and breast cancer, including how to cope with a diagnosis and where to find resources and support.
  • An educational trivia game and Zumba class.
  • Outreach at a local food pantry resource fair.
  • Individual education and assistance related to breast cancer screenings at a free clinic.
  • Education for English as a Second Language technical college students.
“The team is very enthusiastic about offering unique activities that educate people about breast cancer risk factors and tests,” said Saul Juarez Aguilar, manager of outpatient and integrated behavioral health and cultural services. “One of the main goals is to motivate women to schedule breast screenings.”

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, breast cancer cases in Waukesha County have been steadily rising — from 1,596 cases in the years 2000 to 2004, to 2,114 cases in the years 2016 to 2020.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the Hispanic health center helped 424 community members access 774 breast-related services, including consultations, clinical breast exams, mammograms, breast ultrasounds, breast MRIs and biopsies. That was in addition to more than 3,000 people served in the previous four years.

The ProHealth Care Foundation and the Wisconsin Well Woman Program provide support for the 10-year-old program.
