Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS) in Eau Claire collaborated with the Eau Claire Area School District and the Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association to host a free community health forum and conference for the local HMoob community at Eau Claire’s North High School.
The HMoob people, also known as “Hmong,” is an indigenous group with roots in East and Southeast Asia. The conference provided opportunities to learn about the unique aspects of health that specifically impact the HMoob community. Various sessions, many presented by MCHS in NWWI providers, addressed a variety of medical and health concerns specific to the Hmong population, including diet and nutrition, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke prevention, medication management, advanced care planning, chronic diseases and strengthening the body.
Over 100 people attended the inaugural half-day event. All evaluation respondents agreed or strongly agreed that they learned new information, plan to make changes to improve their health, would now feel more comfortable engaging with Mayo or other healthcare systems and would be interested in attending another similar event in the future.
Mayo Clinic Health System’s collaboration with other local organizations highlights its shared dedication to being a strong community partner. These efforts also meet the Community Health Needs Assessment priorities of preventing obesity and reducing chronic disease and championing health equity, diversity and inclusion.
