Strengthening Youth, Preventing Substance Use: A Community Collaboration
Marshfield Medical Center–Ladysmith is an active member of the Rusk County Youth Council Coalition, whose belief is that the health and well-being of Rusk County children and young adults is a shared responsibility. MMC-Ladysmith is a partner in leading a county-wide effort to prevent youth substance use and promote positive development for individuals ages 0 to 21 and their families. The coalition’s mission is clear: to unite local resources in preventing and solving issues related to violence, alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among youth.
Through collaborative planning, open communication, and a focus on prevention, the coalition works to build resilience, encourage wellness, and support healthy choices. This work is especially meaningful in light of the most recent Community Health Needs Assessment conducted by MMC–Ladysmith and the Rusk County Health Department, which identified substance use as one of the top health concerns in the county. For many families, access to prevention resources and education is limited and factors like stigma and cultural norms, economic hardship, or lack of awareness put youth at greater risk. By participating in the coalition, MMC–Ladysmith is helping to close those gaps. The medical center brings clinical expertise, community connections, and a deep commitment to youth wellness.
Whether it’s supporting school-based initiatives, offering educational sessions for parents, or helping coordinate services across agencies, MMC-Ladysmith plays a vital role in ensuring that prevention efforts reach those who need them most and is helping to create a healthier, safer future for Rusk County’s youth by focusing on collaboration with partners and a community-based approach.
