Educating Youth on the Dangers of Smoking and Vaping to Airway Health
As part of its community outreach, Marshfield Medical Center-Neillsville provided educational sessions for local middle and high school students focused on the importance of breathing clean air and the serious consequences of smoking, vaping, or inhaling harmful substances. Students learned about the importance of keeping airways clear and how this impacts overall respiratory function.
Education on this topic is especially important as Substance Use was identified as a top health concern in the most recent Clark County Community Health Needs Assessment. In addition to prevention messaging, students were provided a demonstration and education on Vest Therapy and BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure), two important tools used to support patients with compromised lung function. By introducing students to these therapies, MMC-Neillsville helps build awareness of respiratory care. The teacher who invited MMC-Neillsville to present shared that students benefit from hearing a different perspective and receiving knowledge from multiple people, not just their teachers or parents, on how to keep themselves healthy. This collaborative approach reinforces key health messages and makes a lasting impact.
Through educational outreach in local schools, MMC-Neillsville continues to invest in youth development, and the long-term well-being of the Clark County community. By raising awareness about the dangers of smoking, vaping, and substance use, MMC-Neillsville strives to empower students to make informed choices that support lifelong wellness.
