Tomah Health community health educator Whitney Sanjari helps fit a life jacket during the annual Monroe County National Night Out Aug. 5
Most children and some adults may not know the importance of water safety and how to properly fit a life jacket. Tomah Health Community Outreach staff took note of this important safety topic and provided tips on water safety and how to fit a life jacket during the annual Monroe County National Night Out Aug. 5.
“Putting on a life jacket is a critical step in ensuring safety while taking part in any water-related activities, but the basic steps for putting on a life jacket are the same,” said Community Health educator Whitney Sanjari. She said different life jackets are made for different weights and sizes, so parents should always check the label or ask for assistance if unsure.
National health statistics show that every year in the United States, an estimated 4,000 die from unintentional drowning. Drowning is the also the number one cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 years. More than 700 residents attended the annual event held to bring organizations together to share information on how to keep families safe.
