“In so many ways, Sister Maureen Fagan exemplifies what it means to serve a community and its people, and it’s truly my honor to present her with this award,” said O'Brien.

Fagan has devoted her life to service. She became a nurse in 1965 and answered a calling to religious life by professing her first vows two years later. In the years that followed, she earned credentials as a registered nurse and neonatal nurse clinician and completed studies in religious formation and spiritual leadership, building a foundation for many years of service as a clinician. For the past 18 years, her ministry has been in Chicago, where she served at a homeless shelter as a spiritual director and led a program supporting recovery from substance and behavioral addictions and compulsions. Fagan has also served on the boards of HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center, HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital for the past nine years.

HSHS Wisconsin Market President and CEO Bob Erickson nominated Fagan for this award. In his nomination letter, Erickson said, "Sister Maureen has dedicated her life to serving others in her calling and her personal ministry has impacted the lives of so many people, communities and our health system." He continued, "Her experience, insights and values have kept us tethered to our mission while growing and expanding our reach throughout northeast Wisconsin. She has tremendous vision combined with a caring heart."

As part of her recognition, WHA will donate $500 to the charity of Fagan's choice.
