Inpatient Sepsis Improvements
Every year, 1.7 million adults in America develop sepsis, and at least 350,000 of these individuals either die during hospitalization or are discharged to hospice. Early identification of sepsis in the Emergency Department and inpatient units is crucial.
Bellin and Gundersen Health have implemented monthly Interdisciplinary Sepsis Committee meetings to address this issue. The Gundersen Sepsis Coordinator provided guidance and support to Bellin by reviewing order sets, implementing sepsis BPA nursing screening tools on all inpatient units, and establishing a Code Sepsis protocol in the Emergency Department.
As a result of these initiatives, both health systems have increased compliance with sepsis treatment bundles and decreased mortality rates related to sepsis.
