WHA Applauds Gov. Evers, Lawmakers for Enacting Critical Residency Funding Reforms

In 2013, following the release of WHA’s 100 New Physicians a Year: An Imperative for Wisconsin report, WHA lobbied the governor and lawmakers to provide $5 million over the biennium to create a new graduate medical education (GME) expansion program. Since then, and at WHA’s request, the Legislature has continued to authorize additional funding to meet growing needs for physician training in Wisconsin.

Governor Evers Signs WHA-Initiated Bipartisan Psychiatric Hospital Bill into Law

Governor Tony Evers today signed into law Assembly Bill 616, which was led by Rep. Karen Hurd (R-Fall Creek) and Sen. Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green), enabling Wisconsin to seek a waiver to a 1960s-era federal Medicaid policy that prohibits psychiatric hospitals with more than 16 beds from participating in the traditional Medicaid fee-for-service program for adults.

Bellin and Gundersen Health System received the 2024 Advocacy All-Star Award at WHA’s annual Advocacy Day event on March 20 attended by more than 700 hospital advocates. Presented by WHA Vice President of External Affairs Kari Hofer, the award recognizes one hospital or health care system that exemplifies a dedication to grassroots advocacy.

On March 15 and 16, 147 WHA hospital member CEOs and physician leaders travelled to The American Club in Kohler, WI for the annual Physician Leadership Development Conference. This day and a half CME event provided varied and engaging presentations targeted toward this group’s unique roles and responsibilities in their respective hospitals.

WHA Foundation Utilized Simulation Lab Expands

The Gundersen Health System Integrated Center for Education Simulation Lab has grown. At a recent ribbon cutting ceremony, the Integrated Center for Education (ICE) in La Crosse unveiled its lab expansion, which includes three inpatient rooms that will help certify all staff at Gundersen with basic or advanced life support courses.
